Our Oxford Headington summer school takes place in one of the most pleasant suburbs of OXFORD with local shops and facilities close by yet only a short bus ride or twenty minute walk from the heart of the city. OXFORD has been a world-renowned centre of learning for some eleven hundred years and has inspired writers, scientists and politicians. The countryside around OXFORD  is rich and varied and from the golden stone villages of the Cotswold Hills to the attractive towns of the Thames Valley there are lots of places to visit. OXFORD is 57 miles from the centre of London while Heathrow Airport is just an hour away.


The residence offers a pleasantly landscaped site with some 400 modern single study bedrooms arranged in flats of 5-6 people. Each flat has its own kitchen with lounge area as well as showers and toilets. Many of the bedrooms have wash basins. The flats are in individual blocks of some 60-80 beds over two or three floors. There is a student reception area for the whole site where room keys are picked up on arrival. An on-site laundry facility is available for students’use. CLEANING of communal areas including bathrooms is done every second day. Bedrooms are checked but not maintained every second day. Rooms have a deep clean prior to students’ arrival and will be deep cleaned again once during a 2-week stay. The deep clean also includes a linen change.


  • Classrooms: lessons take place in modern well-equipped classrooms which are centrally located in university academic buildings.
  • Dining Hall: large, brightly-decorated café-style room in the main building close to the office and teaching rooms.
  • Sports facilities: there is an excellent modern university sports complex adjacent to the Headington site with a large sports hall, green field area, fitness room (minimum age 18 years), changing rooms, coffee bar etc.
  • Common areas: The Sports Hall bar with its social and dance area is available for evening discos and other activities. Films are normally shown in one of the modern tiered lecture theatres.
  • Wi-Fi is available in certain parts of the campus.
  • Shops: a student shop is situated in the main building close to the dining hall. It is open during the summer and sells a wide range of confectionary and stationery items. There is also a student bookshop.


Inclusive Trips

The excursions included within the programme comprise of one full day trip at the weekend (normally by coach) and one half day trip during the week (normally by coach) There are also two walking-tour visits to central Oxford during the week.

Likely destinations for full-day excursions include:

London: The UK capital offers an unrivalled choice of shopping, world-class galleries, museums and much more.

Stratford-Upon-Avon: Famous as the birthplace of playwright William Shakespeare, visit historic English buildings dating back centuries – (Entrance to Stonehenge not included)

Salisbury & (Stonehenge): Salisbury is a historic city in the county of Wiltshire where students can also find the magnificent ancient monument of Stonehenge which the coach will pass by.


Optional Trips

In addition to the included activity & excursion programme, a range of optional extra visits and excursions are offered. Here are some of the optional trips offered:

Cambridge: The historic city centre, with its narrow streets and shops, can all be enjoyed on foot.

Windsor Castle: Visit the Queen's favourite weekend home. The oldest, and largest, inhabited castle in the world.

London Eye: Take a ride on Europe's tallest Ferris wheel and enjoy fantastic views over London.

Madame Tussauds & Marvel 4D Experience: Waxwork museum, now with a unique 4D cinema, where you 'feel’ the film as well as see it!

Cadbury World: Uncover a world of chocolate delights and enjoy a fascinating fun-packed day out at Cadbury World!

Bath: The historic spa town with its Roman Baths and picturesque crescents.

When students are not in class or on an excursion they take part in activities in and around our Bedford centre which may include:

  • Sports such as Football, Mini-Olympics, Rounders, Netball, Volleyball, Aerobics, Cricket
  • Evening activities such as discos, karaoke, quizzes, fashion shows, and egg drop.
  • Non-sports such as Show rehearsals, Crafts, Treasure hunt & town trails.
  • Local visits to Natural History Museum, Ashmolean Museum etc.

Meal Provision

All meals are provided in our Headington Centre. Whilst British food has a certain reputation around the world tastes have changed over the last few years and British food has become much more cosmopolitan and varied. Examples of meals are given below:


7 days a week continental breakfast including fruit drink, cereals, toast, preserves, tea or coffee.


A 2-course meal with a range of dishes will be available to choose from. There will be at least one vegetarian choice.


2-course meal including: salad, bread and dessert or piece of fruit. Cold drink, tea or coffee is also available.

Medical Information

If a student is sick and needs medical attention we will help in making appointments etc. Please note however that it is not usual for a doctor to visit the centre directly and any trips made to the doctor, dentist or hospital will have to be paid for by the student Students with a group leader should be accompanied by the group leader.

There is a nurse on site Mon-Fri 9am to 12 pm who will help in making appointments with the local GP.

Local Transport

Trains go to London every 15 minutes approximately. Journey time into London Paddington is about one hour. Day return tickets cost about £23.50 per adult £11.75 per child [under 16 years]. Groups of 10+ receive a discount. Coaches from Oxford Coach Station into Victoria leave every 20 minutes with a journey time of 1 hour 40 minutes; approximate day return cost is adult £17, student £13, child £8. Group discounts may be available. Local buses [numbers 2, 14 and 22] leave from outside the campus on Gipsy Lane and London Road for Oxford City Centre every 8 minutes; journey time is 15 minutes subject to traffic conditions
